CHARACTER NAME: Oerba Dia Vanille
AGE: 19
CANON Final Fantasy XIII
CANON POINT Endgame
HISTORY: "Maybe we'd fall short. Maybe we'd never even come close. But someone, someday, would know we'd tried."
PERSONALITY:
Practically sunshine incarnate, Vanille is aggressively cheerful and rarely not in an absolutely chipper state. Approachable and talkative both silence and frowns are rare finds when she's around. Because the people of Oerba lived communally, personal space and quiet were rare and so naturally she has grown into the kind of person who has no regard for the former and cares little for the latter. She has no trouble approaching even the most sour of sourpusses and striking up a conversation, even if she has to carry the entirety of that conversation on her back. She'll do it with no complaints and a surprising amount of metaphorical upper body strength.

She comes off as a bit of an airhead for this reason. It's not uncommon to find her talking to herself or fully enraptured in something you're not sure you can see or understand. She gets lost on her own head perhaps far too often (and stuck there quite a bit). She seems like the sort who is unbothered by practically everything– but in truth she doubts herself more often than not, and her determination often loses steam when she finds herself confronted with this self-doubt. This is perhaps a consequence of the fact that she cares deeply about other people's feelings (a bit too much, sometimes) and typically puts other people as a whole before herself. She has spent much of her life finding meaning in what she could offer others, and that does a little something to your own sense of self-worth. She values the lives of others more than her own, and if given the chance would put her own on the line for the greater good (because that is much easier than bearing the guilt of hurting others).

Behind the sunshine and smiles she's an incredibly observant person. To invest so much of your existence in other people's feelings also means you have to be acutely aware of what those feelings are. Vanille is just as capable of being cruel or snippy as the next person, and she often is– but those thoughts stay in her head. The people of her village were survivalists, you had to be smart and strong if you wanted to make it to adulthood; this is how Vanille survives, she flies under the radar and plays into what people want her to be.

That too, is not without consequences. Just because she's never honest about her feelings doesn't mean she doesn't have them. She tends to bottle up negative emotion and bury it somewhere deep. When it erupts it's messy, unplanned and contrary to everything she pretends to be.

Guilt and fear guide much of who she is and what Vanille does. She is afraid of being honest, of asking for too much and of valuing herself fully because those things mean perhaps hurting other people. She was given the duty of destroying the world for the greater good and watched the person she loved most shoulder that burden alone because of her own cowardice– and even after that she witnessed person after person pay the price for things she believed were her own fault. Guilt, fear and a strong sense of responsibility are very much at the forefront of steering her decision making in all aspects of her life.

Vanille can take down a bear with her bare hands, and she could play you for a fool if she wanted to (but she won't, because she's nice).

CANON POWERS:
Vanille can utilize elemental magic offensively, as well as healing magic and spells that will briefly buff a targets abilities and lower the capabilities of an enemy. She can also summon the Eidolon, Hecatoncheir who will fight on her behalf.
